Dental implants

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are prosthetic devices, typically made of titanium, designed to replace missing teeth. They integrate naturally with the mouth’s tissues, acting as substitutes for tooth roots. Once placed in the jawbone, they support artificial teeth.

A dental implant typically has three components:

What does implant treatment consist of?

At Clínica Serrano Sánchez, we use the latest technology to plan each case individually. Most treatments begin with a radiological examination (3D bone scan) and a phase of study and 3D planning. We digitally design the final prosthesis through virtual wax-ups and plan the ideal implant placement. To ensure the best outcomes, we digitally simulate both the implant placement surgery and the final restoration before carrying out the procedure. This personalized approach ensures optimal results for each patient.

How is the dental implant attached to the bone?

The attachment occurs through a biological process called osseointegration, where the body forms a direct connection between the bone and the surface of the implant. Once osseointegration is achieved, the implant is firmly anchored to the bone and can support a dental prosthesis, restoring the lost function, health, and aesthetics. Osseointegration is very stable over time, ensuring long-lasting and satisfactory results from implant treatments.

Who is it for?

Dental implant rehabilitation treatments are ideal for patients who have lost one or more teeth due to various circumstances. These treatments offer a reliable solution to restore dental function, health, and aesthetics.

Benefits of Implants

At the Implantology department of Clínica Serrano Sánchez, we can replace missing teeth without affecting healthy tissues of other teeth, unlike conventional bridges. This allows us to restore chewing function and aesthetic appearance in the most conservative way possible, enabling patients to regain both their oral health and a natural-looking smile.

Immediate Post-Extraction Implants:
Can I get implants immediately after tooth extraction, or do I have to wait?

It depends on the reason for the tooth loss. If there is no infection and the bone is healthy, immediate implants may be an option. However, if there’s infection or bone quality issues, waiting is advised to ensure treatment success. The waiting period varies per patient and will be determined by your specialist. In aesthetic cases, a temporary prosthesis can be placed during the healing phase.

Immediate Loading

In certain cases, it is possible to place implants simultaneously with tooth extraction and provide a temporary aesthetic prosthesis on the same day. This allows for immediate restoration of lost function and aesthetics. Consult our specialists to determine if this technique is suitable for you.

Bone Regeneration: What if I don't have enough bone?

In cases where the quality or quantity of bone and gum tissue is insufficient, additional techniques are used to address these issues. These procedures involve grafts from the patient or synthetic materials to increase the amount and quality of tissue in the area. This makes implant placement possible, which would otherwise be unfeasible without these treatments.

Other Considerations
Is the treatment uncomfortable?

The surgical procedures for implant treatments are well-structured and typically result in minimal or no discomfort. Most cases are performed under local anesthesia (sometimes with conscious sedation), similar to many other dental treatments. Patients usually only notice instrument sounds and mild pressure sensations during the procedure.

How long do dental implants last?

Dental implants offer high durability, comfort, aesthetics, reliability, and predictability. While there isn’t a general lifespan estimate for all patients, implants have no known expiration date. The longevity of implants depends largely on the patient’s anatomical and physiological characteristics, habits, the cause of tooth loss, and, most importantly, how well the patient follows the recommended maintenance guidelines provided by our dental implant specialists. Proper care and regular check-ups are key to ensuring long-lasting results.

Can I get implants if I have untreated periodontitis?

No. Implants face the same infection risks as natural teeth. Bacteria from periodontitis can infect the implant, causing peri-implantitis, which leads to bone and gum damage and may result in implant loss. Patients with periodontal disease must first treat it before implants can be placed. Since periodontitis is a chronic condition that can recur, patients must follow special care protocols with regular check-ups and maintenance for both their natural teeth and implants.

How should I care for my implants?

To prevent and detect potential complications early, both the implants and the prostheses require regular care. Proper oral hygiene is essential for the success and longevity of the treatment, along with managing risk factors like smoking, periodontitis, and uncontrolled diabetes. Regular check-ups are also crucial to ensure the implants remain in good condition over time.

Conscious Sedation

Conscious sedation is particularly recommended for patients who may experience anxiety or fear during dental treatments. At Clínica Dental Serrano Sánchez, we offer conscious sedation to ensure a calm and relaxed experience.

What is conscious sedation?

It is a safe and effective technique, supervised by an anesthetist, that helps patients relax during dental procedures. Unlike general anesthesia, the patient remains awake, able to interact with the dentist, while feeling completely relaxed and anxiety-free.

Benefits of conscious sedation

This technique ensures the patient feels no pain or discomfort during the treatment, allowing the clinic team to perform multiple procedures in one visit, reducing the need for additional appointments.
